George Smith's decision would prove to be an unpopular decision; every other distiller was operating illegally at the time and hoping the new Excise Act would be repealed, something which would not happen if some distillers accepted the new law. Threats were made against Smith, so George Gordon provided Smith with two pistols to be used to ensure both his own safety and that of the distillery. [8] In 1824, The Glenlivet distillery was established at Upper Drumin by George and his youngest son John Gordon Smith. [1] [16] a b c d e f g h i Pacult, F. Paul (2005). Spending time in the Solera Vat is what gives this expression in the signature The Glenlivet Master Distiller’s Reserve range its truly exceptional character. Alan Winchester, our Master Distiller, first triple cask matures the spirit in traditional oak, American first-fill and ex-sherry casks. He then selects the best of these casks to transfer to the Solera Vat. The vat, which is never emptied, creates a rich whisky that develops in intensity and complexity every year.” This series is exclusively sold on the travel retail market and is well worth a trip to any airport to buy. Each of the malts has been matured in Sherry, Bourbon and European oak casks, to varying degrees. If the Glenlivet Distiller’s Reserve was more readily available, and not carrying a TR price, I’d recommend it to new Scotch drinkers. But as it sits it’s something I’d recommend trying a pour of when you’re traveling abroad and, in the meantime, I’ll keep recommending the Glenfiddich 15 which is slightly better, ~33% cheaper and readily available. Unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise, your use of and membership to the Service are exclusively governed by Dutch law. We shall first try to settle any dispute over a dram of whisky. Disputes that cannot be settled over multiple drams of whisky shall be solely submitted to the court of Amsterdam, The Netherlands unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise. The Glenlivet distillery is a distillery near Ballindalloch in Moray, Scotland that produces single malt Scotch whisky. It is the oldest legal distillery in Scotland. It was founded in 1824 and has operated almost continuously since. [1] The distillery remained open throughout the Great Depression and its only closure came during World War II. The Glenlivet distillery has grown in the post-war period to become one of the biggest single malt distilleries. The Glenlivet brand is the biggest selling single malt whisky in the United States and the second biggest selling single malt brand globally [2] after Glenfiddich. Illicit distilleries were commonplace throughout the Speyside area from 1700s but were largely made redundant with the passing of the Excise Act in 1823. [12] It was under this legislation that legal distilleries could be formed, subject to holding a license. Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon, was allegedly instrumental in the passing of this legislation. Although there is no historical record of his involvement in the issue, his tenant, George Smith, who was operating an illicit distillery on his Upper Drummin farm at the time, became the first person in Scotland to apply for and receive a license to legally produce spirit. The Glenlivet is now one of Scotland's largest distilleries with an annual production of 13 million litres, which has increased after a recent expansion. It is owned by Chivas Brothers, the Scotch whisky wing of Pernod Ricard. The Glenlivet is one of the best selling Scotch single malt brands, regularly battling with Glenfiddich for the number one spot.Finish:Smooth easy finish that starts with a tangy fruit and finishes with a smooth almost dark chocolate candy-like flavor. Is Glenlivet Distiller’s Reserve Approachable? My tasting of this wasn’t done in ideal conditions, as I tasted it (two 50ml samples) from a plastic cup on a flight from Toronto to Edmonton.
