About this deal

Ready to make a flat white at home? Here’s the equipment and ingredients you’ll need to have on hand for the perfect flat white! Method 1: Steam milk with an espresso machine ( preferred)

The milk frothers featured in this guide were selected from a longlist of over 20 products. All were tested in controlled conditions using the same criteria for semi-skimmed milk, Oatly Barista oat milk, and Hotel Chocolat hot chocolate flakes. We then scored each product out of five against the following areas: Whisper-quiet in operation, speedy and stylish, the Aeroccino4 may just be one of the simplest ways to froth milk we’ve found. While it doesn’t have a huge amount of capacity (a maximum of 120ml if you’re frothing milk, or 240ml if you’re just heating), it’s effortlessly reliable at turning out smooth frothy milk with a satisfying amount of microfoam. If you’re someone who prefers their coffee served with milk, then your next coffee machine really should be equipped with a built-in milk frother. You can buy standalone milk frothers that both heat and froth the milk, but these are markedly inferior to the built-in milk frothers found on the machines recommended here. While a machine with a fully manual steam wand will give the best results once you get the hang of it, there are plenty of automatic and semi-automatic alternatives that can serve up beautifully steamed, frothy milk at the touch of a button. With some, you can heat milk without whisking it (good for hot chocolate) or make cold foam (good for milkshakes). The downsides are that some only let you prepare the milk to one temperature or consistency and some only work well with a small amount of milk.Like most handheld frothers, it's lightweight, small enough to easily store away, and cleaning takes seconds since you only have to spin it in soapy water. We found the grip extremely comfortable, as well. One nice detail that sets the ElitaPro frother apart is that it comes with a whisk for eggs, so you can use it for more than just beverages. Milk frothers are built to froth whereas Velvestiers are made to whisk. What is the difference between a milk steamer and a milk frother?

Adjustable Temperature: The best electric jug milk frother has a unique feature that allows you to choose the temperature that you want the milk heated to. Overall, experiment to find the method that’s right for you.Everyone has different equipment and different desires for their latte. Play with the method until you find what’s right for you! Our Lab team has spent collective decades working in professional kitchens, developing recipes, and testing kitchen gear. Unfortunately, the hot chocolate and cold foam functions aren't as effective as general frothing. The cold foam was suitable, but didn't hold its shape as long as those made by other devices. Our testing team also noted that the hot chocolate powder didn't fully mix. Overall, this is a reliable and reasonably priced milk frother that's worth purchasing; it just comes with a couple caveats. Once you’ve got your equipment handy, you’ll need your ingredients! Here’s what you’ll need to make a flat white:

What we looked for

I've bought one of these, and I'll be doing a comparison video using the various hand whisks, and I'll update this post once I've used them all. Zulay Original By Milk Boss If the Souvia sounds great but way out of your (price) league there are other great performing milk frothers that you don’t need a bank loan to buy! You can use any of the manual milk frothers, above, for cold milk froth for milk shakes and other cold drinks, and many of the electric milk frothers have the ability to produce cold milk froth, too. You wouldn't want to use a steam wand to froth milk for milk shakes, unless you want hot milkshake, and each to their own – I suppose if it's a chocolate flavoured hot milk shake it would be a hot chocolate ;-). Can you froth non-dairy milk? Its durable stainless-steel material will also last you a lifetime. Is a Velvetiser the same as a milk frother? Read on and we’ll explain which types of coffee machine you can choose from and explain their pros and cons. Scroll past our buying guide and you’ll find a list of our favourite manual espresso, capsule and bean-to-cup coffee machines at a range of prices to suit any budget.

In more recent (but even harder to actually verify) history, someone somewhere down under (I'll let Australia and New Zealand argue this one between them) started making a smaller bubbled milk foam to make the Flat White. From what I can gather, the term “Flat White” was already being used by this time simply as a menu abbreviation of “Coffee, white, flat”– but it then evolved at a later time to be produced with this “microfoam”, a texture made by creating smaller bubbles.A milk carafe connects via a small tube, and this allows the Barista TS Smart to serve up a range of milk-based coffees at the touch of a button. Simply choose your drink and the Melitta grinds, brews, steams and pours the results into your cup – it’s a digital barista on your kitchen worktop. Cold milk foam is a revelation, as far as I'm concerned, and it allows cafes to serve real iced latte. What I mean by that is that in my humble opinion, making a coffee with milk and putting ice in it, doesn't make it an iced latte, it makes it an iced milky coffee, to make it a latte it would need to have textured milk, however, if a barista was to stretch the milk with a steam wand and then add ice to it, you'd be served a tepid latte, which doesn't quite have the same appeal. Cordless: They have a separate jug and base so that once the heating or frothing is complete, the milk in the jug can be easily moved around without having to unplug the electrical cord!

OK let's be honest, this isn't just loosely based on a cafetiere ;-), it's basically a modified cafetiere, and good on Bodum for seeing the opportunity and acting on it. The modification Bodum has made to what would otherwise be a cafetiere may be small, but it's important. The mesh used for cafetieres is of course intended to separate coffee grounds from the coffee liquid, it's not intended to froth milk. Both types of textures can be made wetter or drier, though, simply by steaming or agitating for a longer or shorter period and creating more, or less bubbles. OK so that's the manual milk frothers dealt with, and as I've said, these are good when it comes to having more manual control over both the type of milk texture (the size of the bubbles) and how stiff the foam is (how long you continue to create bubbles for). If you have an espresso machine, it'll more than likely have a steam wand, so you'll just need a milk jug to steam your milk in. Stainless Steel: A handheld frother needs to be made with food grade stainless steel. After all you are dipping this in your cup of milk! You can get a good grip on the handle and hold it to the worktop whilst plunging to create the froth Not only is an automatic milk frother easy to use, but they typically froth milk within minutes or seconds!
