His enthusiasm began in school when his teacher read the book to his class, and before she could finish, he persuaded me to bring it home to read at bedtime.

In 1932, Richard Atwater and his wife, Florence, took their two daughters to see a documentary film about Richard E.And besides, back then I would have probably thought someone with a polar exploration obsession was crazy. I mean he got his wish, but as a children's book it fails because children are learning science and they would naturally want to learn more about penguins and why they DON'T live at the North Pole and that would be rather depressing explaining to them that penguins have never known predators-- so lets introduce them to a place where there are other animals who would prey on them and see if they survive?

Surely, they’d envy the Popper children, Janie and Bill, who get to frolic with a flock of penguins!

His children, Janie and Bill are rather shadowy undeveloped characters in the background -- I don't think we're even told how old they are. Florence taught high school French, English, and Latin, and she also wrote a number of articles for the New Yorker and the Atlantic. He wrote for a number of newspapers including the Chicago Evening Post, the Chicago Daily News, the Chicago Tribune, and the Herald-Examiner. The act debuts at the local theater, and soon the "Popper's Performing Penguins" are featured throughout the country. For those of you who haven't read the book, the basic premise is that a house painter who spends his off-hours reading about (and writing to) explorers in the South Pole receives a penguin in the mail from one of those explorers.

My son the nature-lover, who is not as avid a reader as his brothers, is a die-hard fan of this book. In it, the Fiddlers Three have been sent to the dungeon for laughing when King Nicholas sneezes, and it’s up to young Max Luckyfoot to cure him. So he is shocked one day when the admiral responds to his fan letter by sending him a real, live penguin! In the story, rather too many random people on the street express complete ignorance of the existence of such birds ("What are those, puffins?Richard Tupper Atwater (1892–1948) lived in Chicago and worked as a journalist, often writing humorous pieces for newspapers such as the Chicago Tribune. Drake lets all of the twelve penguins go with him on his expedition to the North Pole, where they will be released experimentally into the Arctic. And by then these penguins have had ten chicks, and are eating fresh seafood daily while the kids have presumably eaten each other by now. Dust Jackets are not guaranteed and when still present, they will have various degrees of tear and damage.

But as she gets stressed out by conflict of any sort, it's kind of tough finding good candidates for her. Byrd's Antarctic expedition but had had only completed the first part when he had a stroke and the book was completed by his wife Florence. The story itself is lovely fun with only a couple of domestic violence against penguin scenes; perfect for reading outloud. The past few months the kids and I have been on an "animal stories" kick for our bedtime reading, but of course we like funny animal books, not dead dogs and horses, so I turned to this. This book is amazing when you have started reading it you won't be able to stop and it is good for any age.

Popper dreams of being an intrepid Antarctic explorer, living life among the penguins alongside his hero, Admiral Drake. There's a niche yet vocal Reddit community denouncing the character of Grandpa Joe from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (he's worse in the film than the book imo), and honestly, Mr. But in the theater in New York City, the penguins cause trouble; what's worse, they have inadvertently shown up at the wrong theater.
