About this deal

The four AAA battery configuration also simplfiies use with rechargeables, since many chargers require an even number of batteries. The Black Diamond Storm 400's PowerTap Technology enables you to quickly and easily access maximum brightness with the touch of a finger. Assuming all batteries degrade over time, a torch without an integrated battery may end up lasting longer too.

Often with headtorches, weight and power are something of a trade-off, but the SPOT 400-R is an exception to that rule with a maximum distance of 100m at 400 Lumen output. For a broad field of vision at close proximity, flood mode casts a nice wide beam that's soft and not too dazzling. The headlamp has Black Diamond's Brightness Memory feature, which allows you to turn the light on and off at a chosen brightness without reverting back to the default, full power setting. These red LEDs provide a diffuse light and do not have an adjustable light output; however, they do have a blinking mode that can be activated in the same manner as the blinking mode for the single power white LEDs. As with the Storm, I'm not convinced you get a usable range quite that far in the real world, but you can certainly see a good enough distance to abseil off a winter crag or navigate tricky ground in the dark. The headlamp's angle can be adjusted down a considerable amount via a hinged connection that is very similar to Petzl Tikka models.

For local walks and camping it'd be the bee's knees, says Dan Bailey, but it's let down on the hills by. I strongly suggest sitting down for five minutes at home and getting the hang of it before you head for the hills! These two white single power LEDs are the second light that is cycled to when the on/off button is pressed.A lock function is also essential, as my torches often end up squashed against gear inside my bag and I can’t afford to accidentally lose battery power in case of an emergency! It features a more compact housing and a new design that saves battery life – perfect for any mountain mission. The headlamp has Black Diamonds Brightness Memory feature, which allows you to turn the light on and off at a chosen brightness without reverting back to the default, full power setting. I'm sure some of you can fine even more uses for this versatile little headlamp; just be sure to bring along your patience.

Being rated IP67 waterproof, which essentially means the SPOT 400-R can survive submersion of 1m for 30 minutes, is initially an added reassurance that you won’t be in the dark in the event of a downpour. Increasing the light output is done in the same manner by continuing to press the on/off switch—the light will decrease to its lowest output and then will begin to gradually increase its output. And for the best of both worlds, tap the housing to activate both the wide angle and the long distance LEDs at once. If you’re after a lightweight, rechargeable headtorch with a decent burn time for night navigation, long descents in the dark or as a ‘just in case’ adventure component that you can rely on, this torch is for you. The new Black Diamond Storm 400 is still the burly, fully-sealed waterproof and dustproof headlamp built for rugged adventures, only now it’s brighter, easier to use, and housed in a more compact body. The two single power white LEDs create a good deal of diffuse light that is great doing chores around camp, setting up a tent in the dark, or illuminating a trail for nighttime hiking. For winter mountaineering it's reassuring to think that you'll be able to operate on fiddly ground for longer, and still have power in hand for later.
