About this deal

The humor is juxtaposed against themes of loneliness and rejection, creating a comedy with empathy and soul. Not only did Adam Stower’s illustrations perfectly complimented the story they helped to elevate this book to a whole new level. Best-known for his novels for children including Mr Stink, Billionaire Boy and Awful Auntie, Walliams has also written a number of picture books including The Slightly Annoying Elephant, working with two of Britain’s most talented illustrators, Quentin Blake and Tony Ross.

David Walliams is a literary phenomenon whose books have sold more than 50 million copies worldwide and have been translated into fifty-five languages. Spaceboy is the hilarious new David Walliams book set during the 1960's space race - due for release in September 2022. Named after the space hero, crippled little Yuri’s fourth leg consisted of a battered egg whisk attached by a leather strap, but he possessed the heart of a lion and the bravery of his namesake. This one did have Roald Dahl vibes with the orphaned children and nasty relatives, and of course we have the token bad guy. Walliams also points out that women and girls definitely have a role to play in the space race – something that was undreamt of in the ‘60’s.

Stuck on a remote farm with her awful aunt, twelve-year-old orphan Ruth spends every night gazing at the stars, dreaming of adventure. They may be used by those companies to build a profile of your interests and show you relevant adverts on other sites. As much as they try to escape (riding ostriches, rolling in giant transparent balls, running in the desert, or sliding in craters), Ruth, Spaceboy, and Yuri end up in a top-secret US military base, caught by the faceless figures who happen to be soldiers in special costumes.

I haven't particularly recommended a Walliams book before due to the questionable characters and themes but I would say this one is worth a read!A new illustrator with a slightly different style, but any reader will still recognise Walliams' famed characters and writing style.
