About this deal

Stevenson's novella remains a thought-provoking exploration of the duality inherent in the human psyche, leaving readers questioning the boundaries of humanity and the darkness that lurks within us all. When Utterson tries to discuss Hyde with Jekyll, Jekyll turns pale and asks that Hyde be left alone. Jekyll’s death is not merely accidental, but a consequence of his initial misguided conclusions, the limitations of which his experience as Hyde would make evident.

As a result, he didn’t learn to read until he was seven or eight, but he loved to tell stories to his mother and nurse. In late February, during another walk with Enfield, Utterson starts a conversation with Jekyll at a window of his laboratory. Except for one trip to Sidney, Australia, Stevenson spent the remainder of his life on the island of Samoa with his devoted wife and stepson. Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was an immediate success and one of Stevenson's best-selling works. It is only recently that critics have begun to look beyond Stevenson's popularity and allow him a place in the Western canon.

Well, the child was not much the worse, more frightened, according to the Sawbones; and there you might have supposed would be an end to it. Utterson reads a religious text on his Sunday evenings, reflecting a puritanical character typical of Victorian England, and central to the theme of duality in the novel. Before his death, Lanyon gives Utterson a letter to be opened after Jekyll's death or disappearance.
