About this deal

The Armagnac finish brings softness and roundness to the spirit but does not at all overpower, allowing the spirit character to sing through. I do have a bottle of the discontinued 19 yo whisky in my collection, and perhaps I need to go and open that bottle. Suggestions came thick and fast, but the ones that interested me were Tomatin, Glenglassaugh and Craigellachie – three distilleries I’d yet to try. Tonight, with porridge for dinner (bicycle night) it’s a little sharper and the caramel threads are more subdued – a drop of water brings it back nicely.

Not really knowing the answer, I punched “whisky” into Google Maps and much to my surprise, a pin appeared across the city. Way back in the 1890s Alfred Barnard described "the chief characteristic of the Craigellachie brand is the pineapple flavour it develops with age". The driver will input your year of birth into their device and may then require an ID check to complete the age verification process. I want to explore more of the meaty notes from this distillery and need to find the 17 yo release somewhere. I’d fallen off the love train with Speyside owing to a slight fading of my interest for big sherry bomb drams, and my Speyside stash features mostly big sherry bomb drams, such as the Aberlour A’Bunadh, GlenAllachie 10yo and the indie Glenrothes Alistair Walker Whisky Company “Raisin in a Glass” 11yo.Craigellachie Scotch Whisky brings aromas of oozing toasted marshmallows, roasted pineapple and baked apples studded with cloves, with the tang of cordite lingering in the background. That’s a guess, though, I need to find more “sulfury” whiskies to taste and see if I can confirm it. I have found that your reviews are mostly spot on, but I think that your opinion of the Craigellachie 13 is off the mark. When I stated to the woman in Royal Mile Whiskies that I was new to whisky, she didn’t slump or pensively enquire as to my reason for existing; instead she lit up at the prospect of connecting with someone green, like me – a chance to show someone the magnificence of whisky through the keyhole of experience.

Gold debossing and shoulder bands really make this whisky feel like it’s straight out of the roaring 20s - it wouldn’t look out of place inside Gatsby’s drinks cabinet, that’s for sure.

Craigellachie was not a bottle that I was really aware of before going on a virtual tasting, where I got to try this as well as a lovely sample of Angel’s Envy. The finish is fairly short and dry with some more minerality, the cubic chalk from an old-fashioned puncture repair kit. Now allowed to shine in its own light, Craigellachie is shown to be a chunky, spicy single malt full of character. Craigellachie whiskies are renowned for their robust and complex flavors, characterized by a unique combination of rich fruits, earthy undertones, and a touch of smokiness.

It begins promisingly on the front palate, but the development and finish has some notes that I find really unpleasant. The issue I have with a Speyside sherry bomb dram is they can be a bit too cloying, a bit too dark and fruity, almost teetering over to sour.As an experience, it was reassuring and positive and the Aultmore remains in my cupboard, half-depleted, waiting for a time when I want to revisit it with a more educated and weathered palate. The nose follows suit, with sweet floral and fruity notes, a touch of pineapple and mango, while the palate opens up into symphony of sweet, creamy notes balanced by smoke and leather with a dash of crisp acidity. However, a more detailed review of the process demonstrates significant differences between Aramgnac wine heaters and coolers and the worm tub, but there are indeed similarities.
