About this deal

Legendary steam railway locomotives such as Flying Scotsman, Mallard, Stephenson’s Rocket and City of Truro have been household names for generations and are now owned by the public. The National Collection was amassed largely in the face of modernisation of the British railway network, when the introduction of diesel and electric locomotives in the Fifties led to the mass withdrawal and scrapping of many classic steam locomotive types. She was saved by a single-minded Yorkshireman with a romantic streak who rescued it from the scrapyard in 1980 as a birthday gift for his wife. During the last 20 or so years of the Steam Age, Neil Davenport and his father, the late Arthur Davenport, visited many parts of the country observing and photographing the railway scene. The Yorkshire Post’s photographers — and several guest photographers — have recorded what at the time was the mundane daily scene.
