Players are dealt a secret card that indicates their relationship to other players, and save for the Sheriff this is not revealed to the table. Much as with our review of Inis I have to confess here that I am fully aware I haven’t fully given Bang The Dice Game the opportunity to shine, purely as a result of player counts.

Still, it’s certainly possible to find it difficult to make your point if others are trying their hardest to mislead everyone else as to your loyalties. It’s too convoluted in motivations to be a good fit for those with fluid intelligence impairments, and the pretence of social deduction is too demanding on memory for others. Everyone gets an identity card that gives them a special power, and everything else is deduction and dice. There’s no correspondingly buxon character to Calamity Jane in the male roster, but also she’s not overly objectified.The theme makes sense with the gameplay and overall it makes the game very accessible which means, coupled with the relatively short play time, it is a lot easier to get to the table. The box itself is a winner in my eyes, It’s portable robust and has a cool little perspex window on the front through which you can see your imprisoned dice, lovingly arranged to show whatever combination of symbols you like. The catch is the only person who identifies himself is the sheriff so nobody knows who anyone is as you have to figure it out as each player takes a turn.

Some literacy is needed to interpret character cards but it’s not much because the powers are quite simple. Since only the sheriff role is open, you don't know exactly who is helping you and who is hurting you … except through their actions. It’s a fun game that people get a bit excited about, and I think it’s a great game for any collection. This prevents weird interactions from occurring, apparently, but it’s also just good to be consistent. The first player who dies becomes the ghost and can help his team (or hinder his foes) a bit from beyond the grave.

The Renegades can either help or hinder this process but can only win if they're the last man standing ending in a showdown with the Sheriff. The theme is also well-carried throughout the game, as everything kind of makes sense within the theme (the characters are mostly Western character puns, Dynamite / Gatling / Beer are all Western-ish things, the Western Sheriff fighting Outlaws with the Deputy is kind of iconic, etc. The biggest problem I have with Bang: The Dice Game is that if I have five or more players ready to throw down for a game, I’m almost certainly going to pick something else.When all of his tokens are depleted, the character succumbs to the onslaught and is out of the game.
