About this deal
This book is both a retrospective history of the gay community's use of electronic media as a way of networking and creating a sense of community, and an examination of the current situation, an analysis and critical assessment of gay/lesbian electronic media.
We see how close the two are before they start fooling around, and how their friendship continues to grow even as they manoeuvre their new-found closet relationship. I loved Helping Hand so much that I read it twice in a row (and on the excuse of writing a review, for the third time). For every *fans self* it’s getting hot in here moment she balances it with a *squeee* aren’t they the cutest! Let's assume you had a friend who was in car accident (or whatever) and while he was fine, and able to rest and recuperate at home, he had very limited uses of his hands and arms. Their friends with benefit relationship gradually turns into something deeper and they have to deal with their complicated feelings. How do human rights help us with the experiences of people with intellectual disabilities (ID) who face discrimination and barriers in their sexual lives?
People are people not check marks on a demographic worksheet and all the stereotypes associated with those labels. And there’s not much room for drama, either - people are supportive once they find out about them, and both Jez and Mac don’t dwell a lot about their feelings. Instead of going out every weekend to drink with their housemates, they decide stay in to save cash and focus on their studies. It also reflects on the challenges posed to such an agenda by current economic difficulties and changes in the organisation of adult social care in the UK.
Sure there were plenty of moments with Mac and Jez together, but they became repetitive after the first few times. I think this is one of those books that would appeal to almost anyone so if you haven't already, go get yourself a copy.It also considers the wider literature on the power and possibilities of human rights, 'intimate stories' and translating human rights into everyday change.
