About this deal

But one day the button box shows up without warning and without the man in the black suit to explain what she is supposed to do with it. Castle Rock is an infamous place in Stephen King’s works, and Richard even inserts a statue where a great fire once ran rampant in the infamous town. Gwendy’s Magic Feather is a modern fairy tale fit for the Brothers Grimm updated to slice like a twentieth century switchblade! The first book in the series is Gwendy’s Button Box, co-authored by Stephen King and Richard Chizmar, and if you have NOT read Gwendy’s Button Box, STOP HERE and go read that novella now! The once kind and witty Gwendy of age 12 – the first time she held the Button Box – is still a kind and witty person, because that is her charm, even as she is beset by dangers to her home town, the Capitol, the world, and her family.

We feel for Gwendy as guilt clouds her mind and her strong demureness is rattled by the uncertainty of what she has done in her life – did she act because she wanted to or what things did she do that may have just as a result of holding the talisman, the Button Box. I say ‘I’m sure’ because even though I’m a massive King fan, I often forget characters in his books that I read a decade ago and haven’t caught up on reading his most recent releases. Now examine the character of a person who, despite being told her caretaking of the Button Box has rewards, is savvy enough to believe that there is a cost too and so she does not abuse the power she inherits. Gwendy is like no character I know of and her stories are a great example of contemporary speculative fiction that delves its own niche far into the realms of fiction. This is a book that holds up really well to the start of the trilogy and offers a really nice middle chapter to the series. In a carefully prepared scenario, Gwendy travels to a newly constructed international space station, at which point her own destiny and the destiny of the Button Box converge. As the final volume opens, the world has changed — and darkened — considerably, and Gwendy’s role as guardian has changed as well.

The Gwendy saga began in 2017 with “ Gwendy’s Button Box,” a tightly constructed short novel co-written by Stephen King and Cemetery Dance publisher Richard Chizmar. In 2019, Chizmar carried the story forward with “ Gwendy’s Magic Feather,” a solo effort that effectively maintained the tone and overall ambiance of its predecessor.

What I didn’t like: The actual action aspect of this story is over and done with really quickly at the end. The Cemetery Dance edition has a beautiful texture to the boards with gold foil stamping and awesome cover art by Ben Baldwin and interior art by Vincent Sammy.

If you have read Gwendy’s Button Box, but it was not one of your favorite books, or it did not really move you, I highly recommend a second read if you like the character of Gwendy. When Richard announced that King was involved in book three, I realized it would be a bit odd to have books one and three sitting on my shelf but not book two. His recent work includes Holly, Fairy Tale, Billy Summers, If It Bleeds, The Institute, Elevation, The Outsider, Sleeping Beauties(cowritten with his son Owen King), and the Bill Hodges trilogy: End of Watch, FindersKeepers, and Mr.Combating an array of opposing forces — chief among them her declining mental faculties — she struggles to complete the task assigned to her more than 50 years before. His epic works The Dark Tower, It, Pet Sematary, Doctor Sleep, and Firestarterare the basis formajor motion pictures, with Itnow the highest-grossing horror film of all time. The quality of both editions, from the paper, to the boards, to the dust jackets make both of them worth having side by side.
