In each novella in the series, Pop Larkin kisses, caresses, and pinches most of the women that he encounters. Ma Larkin expects this behaviour and approves of it. When told that Pop has kissed the middle-aged Miss Pilchester, she responds, "Do her good. Make her sleep all the sweeter." It became an instant classic, running for 20 episodes and launching the career of Catherine Zeta-Jones, who played the Larkin family’s eldest daughter. Includes Short Stories by: H. E. Bates; Dorothy L. Sayers; Michael Gilbert; E. L. Malpass, Brian Cleeve

Bates's novel Love for Lydia served as an inspiration for Donna Lewis's 1996 smash hit " I Love You Always Forever". [19] Pop Larkin claims to have no income from his 35 acre farm - yet he is able to provide the best food and drink for his large family. The novel was loosely adapted into the film The Mating Game in 1959. ITV produced a television series of the novel, and its sequels plus additional original storylines, The Darling Buds of May, which ran from 1991 to 1993. A further adaptation of the novel, The Larkins, was made by ITV and broadcast in October 2021. That made me cringe; it was badly out of place. Vuoden 1992 pokkaripainokseen on mahdutettu sarjan kolme ensimmäistä pienoisromaania. Etenkin ensimmäinen niistä on varsin viehättävä. Bradley Walsh continues leading the cast as pop Larkin, the head of the household and at the heart of the antics.

(Herbert) Bates had a way that I found similar to Enid Blyton's of describing in rich detail the food and drink that was consumed, and the after affects. His collection of stories written while serving in the RAF during World War II, best known by the title The Stories of Flying Officer X, but previously published as Something in the Air (a compilation of his two wartime collections under the pseudonym 'Flying Officer X' and titled The Greatest People in the World and How Sleep the Brave), deserve particular attention. By the end of the war he had achieved the rank of Squadron Leader. David released an autobiography called David Jason: My Life, which was shortlisted for a literary award in 2013. He has since written another two autobiographies in 2017 and 2020.

Ma and Pop Larkin and their five children – Mariette, Montgomery, Zinnia, Petunia and Primrose are returning home from a lovely outing to get fish and chips and some ice cream. When they arrive home, eldest Mariette notices a strange man in the yard, looking like he’s been waiting for them. His short story 'The Mill' featured as the extract in the first paper of the AQA English Language GCSE in 2019. The family that inspired hit TV series The Darling Buds of May". Evening Standard. Bates' idyllic depiction of rural Britain is referred to by the character 'I' in cult British comedy Withnail & ISince then, the Welsh-born actress has appeared in a wide range of films, most notably the musical Chicago (2002), for which she won the Academy Award for best supporting actress. At the time the TV show was the most popular show on British TV. Its simple lifestyle, set in the 1950s, showcased the beautiful Kent countryside at its best. Yet as junk-dealer Pop patiently explains: nothing's ever that simple at the Larkins'. Mariette takes a shine to 'Charley' - as Pop calls him - and before long the family have introduced the uncomplaining inspector to the delights of country living: the lusty scents of wild flowers, the pleasures of a bottle of Dragon's Blood, cold cream dribbled over a bowl of strawberries and the sweet song of nightingales. During World War II, he was commissioned into the Royal Air Force solely to write short stories. The Air Ministry realised that it might create more favorable public sentiment by emphasizing stories about the people fighting the war, rather than facts. The stories were published originally in the News Chronicle with the pseudonym "Flying Officer X". Later they were published in book form as The Greatest People in the World and Other Stories and How Sleep the Brave and Other Stories. His first financial success was Fair Stood the Wind for France. After a posting to the Far East, this was followed by two novels about Burma, The Purple Plain in 1947 and The Jacaranda Tree (published in 1949 [3]), and one set in India, The Scarlet Sword (published in 1950).
