Folklore tries to keep players constantly doing something new and different and the dual combat system works well enough to keep the game moving in varied ways. I’ve read Folklore’s rules cover to cover probably a half dozen times, and while I think I know how to play the game correctly, I can’t say I’m 100% comfortable with the rules. They also add bonuses based on facing, outnumbering the enemy, moving out of an enemy's threat area, and more. When I say diverse, please understand that I am referring to their diversity in classes and abilities, not their racial diversity.Instead, players are told to simply mark the new gear on their player sheet or to make their own tokens. I’ve had my fair share of games where combat simply felt like I was going through the motions YET AGAIN. The premise of Folklore is that your group of heroes set out to solve a relatively mundane (in the great scope of things) mystery and begin to delve deeper and deeper into the corruption which plagues the land.
The really cool result is that players will take these elements of game design and use them as jumping off points to roleplay even if they don’t mean to. I’ll guess this won’t matter to around 90% of those reading this but I am a wee bit disappointed the minis are that soft plastic.
I wasn’t kidding earlier when I mentioned GreenBrier loves big meaty games and you can simply watch my video review of Zpocalypse 2 to see how many wheels the company likes to have turning in their titles. I really have been enjoying these because they help you level up and pick up coin that you can spend at the marketplace. Steve and I had the opportunity to sit down with Will Donovan on Roll20, an interactive online game tool, and give the first adventure line a go. If the entire group dies there are actually rules regarding that too so the ongoing story doesn’t need to come to an end.
