I don't think it's realistic for the general populous to ever be aware of the workings of tiers of entry, overlap questions and the like so it's important that the qualifications and grades stand on their own two feet. Even though many people don't particularly enjoy maths or have an affinity for it, there is no doubting the fact that maths is an essential academic discipline that must be studied during the formative years. Why is that? Well, the pros outweigh all of the cons.
The new system is designed to allow more differentiation among the higher grades, with grades 4-6 covering what were grades B and C and grades 7-9 covering what was were the top grades of A and A* in the old grading system. That Edexcel had staked themselves in the middle ground was no great surprise, while some pupils preferred the straight forward questions of OCR or the more convoluted examples in AQA, the majority of pupils preferred a mix of both.
