About this deal

The garden is a place where I welcome and nurture wildlife, and where I grow flowers using practices that minimise my impact on the environment. I followed the instructions on the seed packet, put them in a sunny spot in the garden, and they germinated within a week or two. The time to do this is as they start growing, before they need it, since a fallen plant, scooped up from the horizontal, never looks quite the same.

If plants are too close together use small scissors and cut those plants selected for removal to the ground. Some items are classed as heavy or oversize such as bags of compost, gravels, bird seed, large plastics, large boxed items or tools. The following spring pot the rooted cuttings into individual pots and keep them in the pots all summer before planting them out in autumn, and they will flower the subsequent year. Stick these round the edge of a pot filled with a very gritty compost so that the tops are just below the surface, and put them in a cold frame or greenhouse. Unwins Iceland Poppy Giant Coonara Seeds are a Biennial Mix of pastel shades of imposing flower spikes.Place at a temperature of between 15-20°C (59-68"F) until germination which usually takes 14-30 days. King Kong' is a popular Poppy variety that produces spectacular red flowers that quite simply cannot be ignored. For a start they should always be supported to stop them falling over their neighbouring plants and reducing them to a soggy mush.

While many annual plants could be planted poppies don't like a lot of water on their roots during the dormant stage so using plants that require more water is not recommended. They need full sun most of the day if you do grow in warmer zones then ensure they have shade from noon sunshine.Birds foot trefoil makes a great ground cover with lovely yellow flowers or Sweet Alyssum a tough annual that thrives in hot dry areas will cover the ground while the poppies are dormant. Pot up for a number of weeks (minimum of two-three) and then plant out into final position once the roots have become established. The poppy, which is about 100ft wide and 90ft tall, was drawn by a pre-programmed robot and then filled in by hand using a backpack sprayer.

Unlike the field poppy, which grows anew from seed each year (seed incidentally that can remain dormant for generations in untilled ground, only to be triggered into growth by soil disturbance and light), Oriental poppies are herbaceous perennials, dying back in autumn but reappearing reliably each spring with renewed vigour.

Place at a temperature of between 15-20°C (59-68°F) until germination which usually takes 14-30 days. In zones where poppies die back during the hot summer months having other plants to take their place and cover the ground its advisable, not only does it provide more garden interest but it helps keep weeds down and is better for the soil. Each picture is part of a wider narrative; our collections provide context and serve to tell the story behind every picture. Mix seed in a bucket of dry soil and broadcast sow (this will save all the bother of thinning Sow March to May and just cover).

The Oriental poppy was first grown in Britain in the early 18th century by the Royal gardener George London, and for 200 years was available only in shades of orange or crimson. A giant poppy has been painted on Mills Meadow in Henley-on-Thames to support the Royal British legion's Poppy Appeal. Get them off to a good start by incorporating plenty of organic material into the soil, such as home-made compost. Do not attempt to do this once seedlings are larger (more than 2 inches (5 cm) tall) with strong root systems as it will stunt growth and set plants back considerably. We recommend planting these magnificent perennials in fertile, well-drained soil in sunny areas where they will flourish.

He continued: “We are a family-run business where we look after 150 schools across four boroughs, so the bulk of our business is working on running tracks, football pitches, rugby pitches and this is a project that doesn’t take a lot of time and is important to the people who live here.
