The weather in the vineyards is the principal determining factor: conditions must be ideal throughout the growing season, as well as during the subsequent harvest. Vintage Ports are only made in years of exceptionally high quality harvests, which on average occur two or three times in a decade.

This opaque purple-colored wine is not as developed or flamboyant as Fonseca, but it is super-concentrated and multi-layered, with huge masses of fruit and some tannin in the finish. The wines of the bountiful 1985 vintage have a great balance of power with sweetness and are drinking now. The old vines first planted by Maurice, John and Ron Symington in the mid 1920’s bring a fabulous complexity to the Port wines made at Bomfim. Spice and pepper balance the black chocolate flavours and these are very evident in all the quinta’s ports. Dow’s Old tawny Ports are drier than most (although they retain the classic richness of all Port wines).Three innovative robotic lagares have now been installed at the winery, and Vintage Port is made there in non-declared years and released en primeur. It gradually warms up, revealing marine notes, seaweed and oyster shells tincturing the black fruit.
