About this deal

Following the first invasion of Earth, Gareth Arnold uncovered a Cyber-ship that had crashed in Cambridge many years beforehand and experimented with the technology that had survived. This story of sentient seaweed is set in approximately 1975, as with The Web of Fear—not the only lateral move for the TARDIS, but certainly such things are rare. They are interrupted by a cyber-augmented policeman on a similarly augmented horse; the Doctor creates a distraction, allowing them to escape. Please note that neither Royal Mail, nor our courier services, will collect from us or deliver on Bank Holidays. Vampires of Venice later implies that the first Doctor also used the John Smith alias, but as it’s a common name, that is forgiveable.

Some appear to be entirely robotic but others, such as 'Bitey' have features which suggest they are cyborgs. With The Ice Warriors, we get the introduction of another great villain, the titular Ice Warriors from Mars.He resolves to that if he can’t change this future, he will help the people try to change it themselves. There are several versions of Cybermats - the image above depicts the type discovered in the Arctic. The Cybermen seen here appear to be a transitional form of sorts; they have some characteristics from multiple versions of classic-series Cybermen. It’s the only serial not to follow the “base under siege” format; and it gives us Patrick Troughton playing two roles, as the Doctor and also as Salamander, the villain (seen above). It’s worth pointing out that we owe the continued existence of the Intelligence—and thus, much later, The Name of the Doctor—to Jamie; if he hadn’t pulled the Doctor from the device in episode 5, the Intelligence would have been annihilated.

The Cybermats that appeared in The Wheel in Space were very similar to the ones that had appeared in The Tomb of the Cybermen. For continuity’s sake, it’s good that they are familiar with the Doctor; I’d have been concerned if they weren’t. The same model proved vulnerable to the sonic screwdriver, which was able to either stun or fry the Cybermat memory. Meanwhile, Vol communicates with Jansen, and they realize that the Cybermen are creating a secondary airlock to bypass the one the Doctor sealed.Mondas is an interesting subject in its own right; it is not just a twin of Earth in the sense of sharing an orbit (though it did indeed share an orbit before its ejection), but indeed, it is identical to Earth, having matching continents and oceans, as can be seen in The Tenth Planet. In the 21st century, when the Cybermen of the Late CyberFaction attempted to infiltrate Space Station W3, they had photoreceptors for eyes rather than crystal-based eyes, spines down their backs and lacked the antennae.

When you think you've got the body where you want it, you paint it black and then sand it with a long block (so it goes over low spots) and fine grit wet(? Jansen’s group regroups with Ike, and put on spacesuits; Jansen blows a hole in the hull and they escape out through it. Meanwhile the Cybermen send Grash and the Cybermat to create another route for the Cybermen to reach the humans. I have new appreciation for his acting chops; allowing for just a bit of period-normal cliché, I could easily have believed he was really of Mexican origin in the second role. Nyssa, Frank, and Allan are all captured and taken to the processing lines, but the Doctor succeeds in contaminating the Cyber-Planner’s nutrient feed. She says she is not an android agent, but a double agent, and her mission was not to recruit the Cybermen, but to gather data about the conversion process, which the androids hope to use on human prisoners of war, thus creating new warriors for themselves. Along with the CyberTelosians, these Cybermats lay dormant until Telos was found by the Brotherhood of Logicians. They are diverted, however, by the presence of the Cybermat; it chews into the TARDIS console, seeking the power source, until it fries itself—but the damage is done. Meanwhile, she is in the computer core, and learns some data about the Doctor, notably that he is from another time, and has information about the Cybermen.

It’s the first time that the Cybermen featured in any Big Finish story; it’s also the first time that the Eighth Doctor encountered the Cybermen in any medium.

Perhaps it’s simply that the Cybermen have caused so much emotional misery—not least of all, the death of Adric, whom many fans still mourn—or perhaps it’s that they are simply so much like us to begin with; but either way, this story is full of both dread and sorrow at what they become. Jansen goes to stop him, and the Doctor, unattended, investigates the command-access files in the computer. However, the Doctor is still alive, and recovering; Allan marvels at this, and persuades Zheng that she must examine him, as he may represent new possibilities for the Cybermen. In the other direction, future episodes of the revived series will make reference to this story; the Mondasian Cybermen will eventually merge with the Cybus variant, and a Cyber-Planner (though not the same one in any case) will appear in Nightmare in Silver, as well as several audios: The Girl Who Never Was; Legend of the Cybermen; Last of the Cybermen; and the Cyberman range of audios. Constant meets with Allan, and learns, to her horror, that the Committee will soon process everyone, turning them all into the latest iteration: the Cybermen.
