Prior to and during his professional football career, Holden gained a degree in human movement at Carnegie College and a degree in physiotherapy from the University of Salford. Richard served on the Public Accounts Committee from 2019-2021 and on the European Statutory Instruments Committee until his appointment. He has been part of UK parliamentary delegations to international bodies for democracy, such as the Council of Europe and the Inter-Parliamentary Union. He was a parliamentary private secretary to DCMS, then briefly at DfT and DIT. He was ever-present as the club reached the semi-final of the FA Cup, only to be relegated from the Premier League. Since then, he has worked in both the public and private sectors, as well as in politics. Before becoming an MP, he worked as Deputy Head of Press for the Conservative Party Headquarters and as a Special Adviser to the Secretaries of State for Education, Defence, Transport and in the House of Lords.Asked if the first asylum seekers could be moved to the barge in Portland, Dorset, before the summer, he told Sky News “it could even be sooner than that”.
