Kerry Daynes writes with knowledgeable insight on a side of people - and the criminal system that purports to treat them - that many would prefer to leave alone. The humour and psychological skills that have enabled her survival shine through.' Jessica Fellowes, author of The Mitford Murders She may be dealing with it but there are undeniable scars from such a career choice. She has two Chow Chow dogs, Fozzchops and Humphrey, because, after enduring years of stalking by a total stranger, 'I wanted to feel safe and Chow Chows are a cross between a bear and lion; protective.' Jung wrote that if awareness of the projection of the shadow remains repressed, "the projection-making factor (the Shadow archetype) then has a free hand and can realize its object—if it has one—or bring about some other situation characteristic of its power", lending the idea autonomous qualities which can have consequences on the id and the ego. [20] These projections insulate and delude individuals in society by acting as a symbolically deployed barrier between the ego and the ego-less Real. Hillman, James (2007) [1985]. anima: an anatomy of a personified notion. Spring Publications, Inc. p.2. ISBN 978-0-88214-316-3. Contrary to a Freudian definition of shadow, the idea can include everything outside the light of consciousness and may be positive or negative. [ citation needed] Because a subject can repress awareness or conceal self-threatening aspects of the self, consensus of the idea of the shadow that it is a negative function in the self, despite the extent of the repression failing to prohibit these aspects. [16] There are positive aspects that can remain hidden in one's shadow—especially in people with low self-esteem, anxieties, and false beliefs—with these aspects being brought to the conscious mind and exercised through analysis and therapy. [17] It may be considered the subject's identification with id, superseded in early childhood, though it can also be influenced by early to late childhood. [18] [19]

Through the lens of mindfulness, that dark thought is no more or less meaningful than a sad, happy or excited thought. We cannot say that a thought is inherently good or bad. Of course, if you had spent a lot of time cultivating that thought, with the intention of thinking that way, then it would be a little different and far more serious, but ask yourself: did you want that thought to arise in the mind? Did you ask it to arise in the mind? Of course not - this is simply the nature of the mind and thoughts come and go all the time. As ever, it is our perception of them - the energy we give them - that creates our suffering. If only we knew that others experienced similar thoughts, perhaps we would not feel so much shame. Welcome to the world of the forensic psychologist, where the people you meet are wildly unpredictable and often frightening.Avens, Roberts (1977). "The Image of the Devil in C. G. Jung's Psychology". Journal of Religion and Health. 16 (3): 196–222. doi: 10.1007/BF01533320. JSTOR 27505406. PMID 24318090. S2CID 13610615 . Retrieved 2022-06-25. [A]s superstition holds, a man without shadow is the devil himself. [...] The devil[...]can be regarded as God's dissatisfaction with himself, a projection of his own doubt [...] The devil here is a psychopomp[.] But individual blindness is hardly the whole story. Another key characteristic of the era of post-truth is the way in which false information spreads. Here is where new technologies, and in particular social networks, come into play: the ability to share and disseminate makes it possible for any belief to turn into “information,” especially as the distinction between them tends to disappear. Walter Quattrociocchi and his team at the IMT School for Advanced Studies in Lucca, Italy, showed how Facebook amplifies the confirmation bias through its “personalized” algorithms. In fact, these algorithms lead to the creation of isolated communities that tend to become polarized, ones whose beliefs are reinforced and become ever more extreme. Buzz Neurons To set the stage for the main discussion, I will start with eight results. There should be no disagreement about what the data are, if we share assumptions about the nature of the test, and in fact these results are now sufficiently commonplace so as to be accepted. The real discussion we might have lies in the material that follows, concerning some unexpected effects and what they may be telling us about the nature of implicit attitudes. As well, I will mention a couple of the larger set of questions that remain unanswered. 7 Implicit Race Bias Using the IAT: The Main Results Demos, Raphael (1955). "Jung's Thought and Influence". As for the 'shadow' side of human nature (on which there is no difference of opinion between Freud and Jung) we may remind ourselves of Plato's phrase that 'in all of us, even those that are the most respectable, there is a lawless, wildbeast nature which appears in sleep' [...] ( Republic 571-2)

Greenwald, A. G., McGhee, D. E., & Schwartz, J. K. (1998). Measuring individual differences in implicit cognition: The implicit association test. I swear to tell the truth, and nothing but the truth, about true crime. ‘True crime’ is somewhat of a misnomer, as the genre does not reflect the majority of what goes on. It is highly skewed towards the lurid re-telling of rare cases involving serial killers, dark-alley molesters and ‘crazed’ loners. It creates a misleading picture of the nature of violent and sexual crime that perpetuates stereotypes of offenders and victims alike. Jung, C.G. 1952. "Answer to Job." Welcome to the world of the forensic psychologist, where the people you meet are wildly unpredictable and often frightening. The job: to delve into the psyche of convicted men and women to try to understand what lies behind their often brutal actions. Le Guin, Ursula K. (1975). "The Child and the Shadow". So like Susanna and Eric, I’d be very interested to hear more about the way you are thinking about what the IAT measures, and I’d welcome more information about studies that examine the relations among IAT scores and behavior that would independently support a charge of bias. Eric reports finding Payne’s results surprising, but they seem to me to be rather what one would expect if the IAT is not really tapping into the cognitive and affective states that control and explain much of our behavior. Many thanks for the article. A few questions come to mind (especially the propositional vs. associative structure question, but Susanna seems to have that covered):

I test neurtal on the IAT for race, and yet I think I am very race conscious. Race is an annonying salient feature in my experience, and I make some effort to keep this somewhat under wraps. Brown, Rebecca; Stobart, Karen (2008). Understanding Boundaries and Containment in Clinical Practice. The Society of Analytical Psychology Monograph Series. Karnac Books. p.7. ISBN 978-1-85575-393-8. Those parts of our psyches that are hidden and that we find difficult to face, Jung called 'the shadow'.When Sarah first came to see me at the clinic I used to work at in London, it was immediately evident that she was storing a lot of pent-up emotion, ready to cry at any moment. She looked fraught with worry. Sitting forward, looking on edge, she said she had tried ‘doing’ everything, but the baby seemed to be constantly crying. “I don’t know what to do with myself...I’m desperate,” she said, and then the tears came. Carl Jung has captured the interest of both academics and spiritual seekers alike. One of his most powerful discoveries was his concept of “The Shadow.” Human beings have considerable capacity for self-deception 5 because the architecture and the traffic through the mind allows information to be dissociated: it allows us to both know and not know the same thing, to feel and not feel the same way about the same thing, to be aware and not aware of the motives that guide behavior toward ourselves and others. Psychologists and neuroscientists have found it profitable to think about the mind’s fractures by relying less on the malign motives of bad social actors as the explanation, and more on elucidating the evolutionary presses that created the minds we have and the sociocultural and situational presses that exert influence on us more proximally. Neumann, Erich. 1990. Depth Psychology and a New Ethic (reprint ed.). Shambhala. ISBN 0-87773-571-9. I've seen the worst things that people can possibly do, but I've also seen the best in people. How people react when bad things happen can be so inspiring. We are all a lot stronger than we think.'
